On our way back from the 3 day Routeburn trek, we opted for the short “Cruize Milford” boat ride out to the Milford Sound as an add on to our transportation back to Queenstown. We and our Austrian friends from the trek jumped on board the large Eco Tour bus full of smiling, freshly washed and dressed up vacationers! Hope they didn’t mind that we hadn’t showered in 3 days and could barely walk!
It was a little disappointing that the weather was overcast and the peaks were not snow capped, but we thoroughly enjoyed the freshly brewed free coffee and complimentary muffins. We were a little too tired to ‘ooh and aah’ at the landscape, similar but inferior to that we had just trekked. Overall, we were not too impressed with the Milford Sounds, especially since the area is highly marketed as one of the premier attractions in New Zealand. After being on the road for six months, the tourist factor slips away and we have to remind ourselves not to compare sites and still try to capture the uniqueness of each place, but trust us, it’s difficult not to be jaded!
